Early researchers John Mayer and Peter Salovey described it in 1990 as: “the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.”
Author Daniel Goleman, whose 1995 book “Emotional Intelligence” triggered the term’s surge in popularity, credits Mayer and Savoy with offering “first formulation” of the concept. He recommends testing yourself to identify strengths and weaknesses (“for one person it may be social awareness, for another person it may be self-awareness”) and then presents the following “three silver bullets for increasing your EQ.”
