A strong understanding of how to communicate with and motivate your athletes, while strengthening and honing their athletic skills, is necessary. A winning coach or teacher means much more than just defeating the other team–being able to model leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and other important character traits will provide athletes with the positive growth opportunity that can last well beyond the playing field. A scholarship for this certificate and a selective group of other certificates is available. This scholarship was created in honor of an employee and lifelong learner here at the University of San Diego’s Professional and Continuing Education, Marcia Sue Rathfon.

Principles of Coaching is a two-unit online course for coaches and educators that want to define or enhance their coaching philosophy to build stronger student-coach relationships
Online two-unit course for educators, coaches, physical education instructors who work with student athletes and want to provide character education to their athletes
This two-unit online course for athletic coaches and physical education teachers focuses on differentiated instruction and training and increasing motivation of student athletes.
Once you have enrolled in your course, log in to your account to access the course Welcome Letter, which includes directions on how to access the Online Orientation and your online course.

This is an online professional growth course for athletic coaches and other educators that want to enhance their leadership skills and also want to hone their students’ leadership skills

Our online self-paced courses are similar to online fixed-date courses, but are designed to give you a six-month period from time of enrollment to complete all assignments. Like fixed-date courses, online self-paced courses are asynchronous, meaning that you can work on your assignments anytime; the difference being there are no assigned due dates in self-paced courses. Your instructor will provide feedback via written responses on your assignments and exams. Grades are based on completed projects, assignments and exams.

Professional and Continuing Education courses that are transferrable to a USD master degree will be stated on the course or certificate page. If you wish to transfer credit, it is your responsibility to confer with the receiving institution before enrolling, as each individual academic institution decides whether or not to accept USD Professional and Continuing Education credit.
