In our Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) series of online courses, we will explore the nationwide push for higher standards in the sciences and mathematics after a decline in the United States' global rankings of students. The NGSS are designed to provide educators with a framework for developing scientific curriculum that prepares students to be innovative leaders that help propel America into the foreground of the global scientific and technological landscape. Through our NGSS online courses, teachers will learn how to effectively implement these standards in their classroom to help shape students into the science and mathematics leaders of tomorrow.

The Next Generation Science Standards Series is comprised of courses for educators at all grade levels. It is recommended that participants begin with the Introduction and Unpacking courses followed by the corresponding Unit and Lesson Design course for the grade level you are teaching.

What are The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)?

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are a new set of science educational standards that address needs in K–12 science education, based on A Framework for K–12 Science Education established by the National Research Council in 2012. The new standards apply to a variety of subjects and concepts within the subject of science, but primarily focus on life sciences, physical sciences, earth and space sciences, and engineering and technology. Beyond the subject matter of the Next Generation Science Standards, the NGSS also established implementation best practices designed to help educators and districts to bring these new standards and the future of science education to life.

How These Courses Improve Classroom Learning

Taking these online NGSS courses will help improve student learning largely because they help educators best implement these new standards into their curricula. The NGSS standards are based around a concept referred to as ‘three-dimensional learning,” which is likely unfamiliar to most educators. These three components — Disciplinary Core Ideas, Cross Cutting Concepts, and Science and Engineering Practices — will be covered in our courses so teachers feel confident using them in the classroom. When educators have a firm grasp on the concepts and the techniques associated with the NGSS, students are more likely to feel confident and supported in their science learning journey.

Experienced Faculty Instructors

Etelvina Carrazana, M.Ed., is a teacher in Sacramento, Calif. She is dedicated to bringing innovative teaching methods, such as inquiry-based and project-based learning, to her students who live in an underserved community. She developed a S.T.E.A.M. Academy to provide after school enrichment opportunities. As someone who is certified in Gifted and Talented Education emphasizing differentiated instruction, she encourages all of her students to reach their highest potential. Additionally, Etelvina mentors beginning teachers, providing support in classroom management, curriculum, and lesson design. A member of the National Science Teaching Association, Etelvina is eager to collaborate and share her classroom experiences with other science-loving instructors.

What are the next generation science standards?

Are the NGSS a requirement in all schools?

The NGSS are not mandatory in all states and school districts, but many are slowly adopting these new standards and practices. So far, 19 states have adopted the NGSS, but many more are expected to follow suit.

What is the format of these courses?

The online NGSS courses offered by USD are delivered in an online, self-paced format. That means series participants can go online when convenient and complete the course within six months from enrollment.

The University of San Diego’s Division of Professional and Continuing Education is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges – Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
