Course Description

Credit Validation for DoDEA Participants Only

I have committed to engaging students in a thinking classroom, but how do I know they are learning? What are the most valuable competencies for students to possess, and how do we develop and nurture these competencies in our students? The answer to this question lies in evaluating what we value. How we choose to evaluate is just as important as what we choose to evaluate. If we want our students to be active partners in their learning, we need to find ways to use formative assessment to inform both teaching (and teachers) and learning (and learners). As educators, we will explore shifting away from what is sometimes referred to as “event-based grading” and toward outcomes-based grading (also known as standards-based or evidence-based grading). The benefits of this shift are many—from increased student agency to improved student performance (O’Connor, 2009; Stiggins et al., 2006).
