Become a Designer of Learning with MVP Tools!

The MVP classroom experience does not look like the traditional mathematics classroom. In the MVP classroom the teacher launches a rich task and then through “teacher moves” encourages students to explore, question, ponder, discuss their ideas and listen to the ideas of their classmates.

With MVP inquiry-based approaches aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, emphasis is on the 4 C's including:

  • Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking
  • Communication
  • Creativity

Each lesson begins with a worthwhile task that has been designed to develop mathematical understanding, solidify that understanding, or allow for practice of the new concepts, while focusing on the mathematical goals of the chosen learning cycle.

Graduate Level Extension Credits

Graduate level extension credit is available for each of these two day (1 unit), or three day (Modeling Functions: Progressions and Practices only – 1.5 units) conferences. Who Should Attend

Designed for professional development for all High School Math teachers that are seeking to implement the Common Core Standards.

Course Format

This program offers the following two and a half day conference options:

  • Teach Like an MVP: An Introduction
  • Modeling Functions: Progressions and Practices
  • Transformational Geometry: Progressions and Practices
  • Lead Like an MVP: Leadership Conference

Instructors

Courses are taught by the authors of the Mathematics Vision Project (MVP) materials, who share the MVP curriculum as a new and innovative open educational resource at the conference. The team includes two classroom teachers, a curriculum director, a building administrator and a university professor. They provide excellent professional development that is aligned with the CMI framework, the New Core Standards (CCSS) and the latest research and quality practices of Mathematics Education Professionals.

Joleigh Honey

Joleigh Honey is the Mathematics Supervisor for Salt Lake City School District and has a master's degree in Instructional Technology. She has worked for several years as a high school teacher and professional development designer focusing on mathematics and received an award for being an exemplary teacher of teachers.

Scott Hendrickson

Scott Hendrickson is an associate teaching professor at Brigham Young University. He retired from classroom teaching where he had received multiple awards including Teacher of the Year (1993) and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (2003). Scott brings great insight and vision to everything he does.

Barbara Kuehl

Barbara Kuehl is the director of Academic Services and Professional Development in the Salt Lake City
School District. She has been a facilitator in the Mathematics Leadership Program at Mt. Holyoke College and has taught Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI) courses for a number of years.

Travis Lemon

Travis Lemon teaches junior high school, grades 7 to 9, mathematics. He currently teaches at American Fork Junior High where he has taught for twelve years. Travis has a M.A. in Mathematics Education is National Board Certified in Early Adolescence Mathematics and has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics (2007).

Janet Sutorius

Janet Sutorius teaches at Juab High School and serves as the Juab School District mathematics specialist. She has a M.A. in Mathematics Education and is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching (2009). Janet enjoys developing and delivering professional development. She has been involved with professional development at the state, district and school levels.

Curriculum

The MVP team has created all of the resources needed to guide students to develop conceptual understanding with “proficiency, along with factual knowledge and procedural facility." According to the State of Washington, MVP materials top the charts when it comes to Alignment, Rigor & Balance as well as Deeper Learning. All essential attributes of a focused, coherent and rigorous curriculum.

On Campus Accommodations Available (Only available for summer conferences)

Each occupant will have a single room with a shared bathroom, kitchen and living space. More details include:

  • All beds in shared rooms are extra long twin sized. All beds in single rooms are full size.
  • All apartments have a full fridge and freezer
  • All of the apartments have shared bathrooms. Any four person apartment (regardless of shared or single rooms) has two bathrooms, and every two person apartment has one bathroom.
  • Linens are provided
  • No AC or TVs are provided in the rooms
