Course Description

Credit Validation for Dyslexia Training Institute Participants Only

This a virtual conference will consist of 11 presentations. Conference registrants will have 24-hour access to all pre-recorded workshops/presentations for the entire duration of the conference. After viewing each workshop, registrants will be able to post their questions on the workshop’s discussion board and questions will be addressed by the experts. Conference topics include: phonetics, structured word inquiry related topics, executive function, advocacy related topics, dyslexia assessment & screening information, dyslexia simulation, basic math skills for tutors, and writing instruction.

Number of Units: 1.5 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for teachers in the public and private schools (general education, special education, reading specialists), administrators, psychologists, private practitioners (academic language therapists, tutors, speech and language pathologist), parents, and lifetime scholars.

  • Be provided with information on how understanding speech sound production can help developing and struggling readers
  • Gain insight about structured literacy related topics such as explicit instruction and spelling- meaning connections
  • Learn about executive functions, why they are important, and how to help
  • Be provided insight into what struggling readers and writers go through on a day-to-day basis by completing a simulation (Dyslexia for a Day)
  • Learn about how to advocate for reading skills in an IEP (i.e., reading goals)
  • Be provided with information about what should be included in a comprehensive assessment of dyslexia
  • Be provided insight about Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) assessments and neuroscience findings that can help with identifying the profile of dyslexia
  • Be provided information about how dyslexia tutors can broaden their scope to include basic math help
  • Learn about the Writing Rope Framework
  • Be provided insight on how shifting from word walls to sound walls is beneficial for our students
