This pathway to TEFL Certification is for educators and aspiring teachers who are looking for professional opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in Teaching English as a Second, Foreign and an International Language. The program helps students understand English language structure, and the language learning and acquisition process. It also provides methods for teaching English as a second, foreign and international language to children and adults in academic, business, and other vocational settings.
Our TEFL Certificate program also includes a Career Workshop specifically designed to help participants in their job search. This Workshop includes practical information related to teaching ESL in various areas of the world, useful advice about the do’s and don’ts of an international job search, as well as support in developing effective resume and interview skills.

At the University of San Diego you have the opportunity to progress through multiple levels of educational achievement by moving from TEFL to TESOL to an M.Ed. in TESOL.
Complete the requirements below to earn a professional TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate.
- Complete the Foundations in TEFL (2 units, 25 instructional hours)
- Complete TEFL Immersion (8 units, 100 instructional hours)
The Foundations in TEFL course is delivered in the online fixed-date format. Students are encouraged to refer to the Technical Requirements section for additional information. Instruction for the TEFL Immersion course is delivered in the classroom format at the English Language Academy (ELA), on the campus of the University of San Diego.
The program consists of two courses for a total of 125 hours of instruction. Upon successful completion, students are awarded certification to teach English, which is accepted in most countries around the world.
