The Real Estate Finance, Investments and Development certificate is intended for real estate business professionals who wish to build a foundation for a career in the commercial real estate industry. Our stand-alone courses are great for professionals seeking proficiency in a specialized area.

Remote Learning

This certificate is offered online. The exception being one course, REP-X840 Real Estate Projects in Action, which consists of four distinct project site visits.

Real Estate Certificate Requirements

To earn a professional certificate in Real Estate Finance, Investments and Development, complete the following requirements:

  • Complete 6 required courses
  • Complete CEQA seminar
  • Complete 2 elective courses
  • Complete all coursework with a final grade of 'C' or better
  • Attend 70% of all scheduled sessions - 3 of 4 sessions are required

Experienced Instructors

Stath Karras: Stath Karras is the executive director of the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate (BMC) at the University of San Diego School of Business. Karras has decades of experience in many real estate industry roles, including serving as the executive managing director at Cushman & Wakefield, where he was involved in executive management, business development, receiverships and operations throughout the Southern California region. Karras was also president and chief executive officer at Burnham Real Estate Services. Outside of work, he served as chairman for the San Diego Regional EDC, chairman of CONNECT and co-chair of LEAD San Diego, and currently serves on the board of HG Fenton and as an advisor to multiple companies.

David Malmuth: David Malmuth is the President of David Malmuth Development, LLC, that aims to create art-inspired places that transform communities. Prior to starting his own firm, Malmuth was the Founder and a Managing Director for eight years with RCLCO’s Development Services Group, and also served as Senior Vice President at TrizecHahn Development Corporation. During his six-year tenure there, he was the Project Executive on the $615 million Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex. Malmuth earned his Master of Business Administration from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology from Claremont McKenna College.

Scott Peterson: Scott Peterson is the Executive Vice President of CBRE Capital Markets, where he has successfully originated, underwritten and closed commercial mortgage debt and equity for all property types across the country. His areas of expertise include payment debt financing, joint venture equity, bridge loans, mezzanine debt and structured financing. Outside of work, Peterson is involved with NAIOP, Mortgage Bankers Association, Century Club of San Diego and other professional organizations in California and the U.S.

Gary London: Gary London is widely regarded as one of the foremost real estate advisors to many of the nation’s largest developers, investors, lenders and real estate asset managers and owners. London is a Partner of London Moeder Advisors, and has also held positions at Price Waterhouse and the Goodkin Group. London’s teaching experience goes beyond USD: He was a professor at Arizona State University and taught at the University of California, San Diego Extension. His breadth of real estate knowledge has been showcased when he served as a commentator on the CBS Evening News and in his testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs.

I am unsure if I want to pursue a certificate, can I make a decision after a few courses?

Yes, all courses can be taken as stand-alone professional development courses. Once you are ready to declare yourself as a certificate track student, make sure to add the certificate fee to your cart.

Do courses need to be taken in sequence?

No, courses can be taken in any sequence.

How long are courses and where do they meet?

Courses are typically four weeks long and students meet once a week via Zoom.

Are textbooks are required?

No, textbooks will not be required. All course materials will be shared via Blackboard.
