Course Description

Credit Validation for Slingerland Participants Only

This course covers a four-week or six-week period of intensive study. It offers training etiology and diagnosis of specific language disability (dyslexia) and provides training in the techniques designed for a preventive and/or remedial program for classroom use. These techniques were developed by Beth H. Slingerland as an adaptation of the multisensory approach originated by Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. They are based on upon sound neurological principles of learning. These techniques give the child tools needed to function successfully in all areas of language arts, whether reading, writing, spelling or speaking. Course objectives:

  • To provide instruction in the introductory steps of handwriting, written language, decoding and reading comprehension
  • To develop understanding of the etiology of dyslexia
  • To introduce phonic rules and their application to encoding and decoding
  • To provide understanding of the neurology of language and offer means of developing oral language skills
  • To provide information about the history, philosophy and current research in the field of dyslexia
  • To guide an understanding of the relationship of curriculum and classroom organization to the language arts program
  • To apply multi-sensory teaching principles by daily work with children

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand the principles of multisensory instruction as supported by current research
  • Understand the development of oral language skills as related to written language
  • Identify major characteristics of dyslexia and other language-based reading disabilities
  • Understand the organization of the English language and the application of morphology to encoding and decoding
  • Understand the application of the Slingerland® Approach to existing classroom curriculum materials
  • Create and implement daily language arts lessons in the Slingerland® Approach to Language Arts

Number of Units: 6.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for teachers interested in meeting the needs of students with specific language disability who struggle with reading, writing and spelling.

Instructors: All instructors are certified in the Slingerland Multisensory Structured Language Approach.
