Course Description

Gain Beneficial Tools and Concepts to Understand Bias and Diversity in Our Changing World

This four-part workshop will give the participant an understanding of terms and tools that will help to create awareness of unconscious bias, enculturation, and patterns that inherently contribute to bias within the self and within others. The training will offer discussions and tools to start recognizing and being aware of bias in the self and ultimately help to overcome bias in thinking and actions. Articles, books, and videos will be recommended to enhance further learning. The workshop meets for four one-hour sessions covering the following topics:

  • Session 1: Bias and The Trusted 10
  • Session 2: Rational Thought, Nature vs Nurture, Stereotyping
  • Session 3: Bias Tools, Intersectionality, Privilege, and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
  • Session 4: The purpose of Bias training, more tools for understanding and overcoming bias

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand terms related to bias and be able to understand their own bias
  • Know how to use tools to recognize their bias and mitigate their bias as necessary
  • Understand where rational thought and emotions influence our thinking
  • Recognize enculturation and how that contributes to bias and stereotypes
  • Learn to effectively demonstrate an understanding of intersectionality, privilege and how this impacts our world
  • Knowledge of the tools and effective strategies for understanding and overcoming bias

Workshop Format: The workshop sessions will be hosted utilizing the Zoom platform. Once registered, the information sent to students will include the Zoom link to the sessions along with the password.

Number of Units: 0.0 credits, this is a non-credit learning experience

Who Should Attend: Registrants do not need to be students of USD - this workshop is open to anyone and offers beneficial tools and concepts to understand bias and diversity in our changing world

Instructor: Keisa Williams, MC, teaches psychology, human development, cultural diversity, and communications courses. She has a master's degree in counseling and is certified by the National Diversity Council to conduct Bias and Diversity courses in businesses, schools, and at conferences.
