Course Description

This two-day workshop, will reference documents from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to examine the research and practices that create equity and access for all students.  Participants will work specifically on teacher practices that provide access to rigorous mathematics for all students, encourage productive perseverance, and maintain the cognitive demand of the mathematical task.  Participants will learn formative assessment practices, along with when and how to provide intervention for struggling learners.

The workshop will introduce classroom routines and language acquisition strategies that support English learners and other academic language learners in the classroom, including sentence frames, graphic organizers, and specific discussion structures.  The workshop will build teacher capacity for orchestrating mathematical discourse and building a language-rich environment.

Participants will be engaged in doing mathematics and experiencing new teaching strategies throughout the workshop.  There will be opportunities to share classroom experience and apply the ideas of the workshop using lessons from the Mathematics Vision Project curriculum.

Learner Outcomes

This workshop will help you to create an inclusive and supportive classroom so that all students can learn mathematics.  You will learn specific strategies for:
