Enhance Your Writing Skills for Graduate School

This course is designed to enhance the writing skills of students entering or enrolled in graduate programs utilizing the APA style of writing. Through interactive assignments and systematic instruction, the student will be able to format a paper, project, thesis, or dissertation utilizing the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Additionally, the course examines reference structure, citations, plagiarism, and mechanics of academic writing with appropriate grammar to be successful in producing scholarly papers in graduate-level courses.

Learner Outcomes

  • Apply APA style to original academic content
  • Demonstrate use of appropriate grammar in original content
  • Integrate the mechanics of APA style to include punctuation, capitalization, italics, and the use of numbers
  • Compose original written content with appropriate citations based on information from scholarly articles
  • Construct basic tables and figures in Word; import tables and graphs from Excel to Word
  • Prepare a reference list with appropriate citations in original content

Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course is for those planning to enter or currently enrolled in a graduate-level program who struggle with academic writing, English Language Learners, and those seeking to improve their writing skills and must prepare class assignments, publications, and projects according to APA’s Publication Manual (6th ed.).  Educators that would like a refresh in graduate writing skills would also find this course of value.

Course Materials: Text, Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition) by American Psychological Association, available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore.  Instructor recommends the spiral bound version of text.
