Course Description

Develop Technology Tools and Knowledge Needed for Cyber Security

Computers and computer-based systems are integral to almost every area of modern life, and protection of those systems and the data they contain is a critical need. Cyber security is the collection of technologies, processes, and practices designed to protect information stored and processed in computer and computer-based systems from damage and unauthorized access. It is estimated that the cyber security market for devices and services will top $100 billion in 2018. Yet, despite the staggering amounts of money being spent, successful cyberattacks are reported every day and the cyber security problem seems to be getting worse. Why are computer systems seemingly so easy to attack? What makes computer systems unsecure? Can we make computer systems more secure and, if so, why don’t we? Students in this course will study the technology of computer systems as a foundation for understanding how attacks can happen, how to prevent and manage attacks, and the reasons why our systems remain so vulnerable after many years and billions of dollars of effort. No previous computer knowledge is assumed beyond the ability to use common computer applications, such as text editors and web browsers.

Learner Outcomes

  • Explain the function of the various hardware and software components of a computer system
  • Summarize the different types of vulnerabilities that can be present in each of the components
  • Describe different techniques that can be used to eliminate or at least mitigate the vulnerabilities
  • Recognize some of the reasons why the mitigation techniques may be ineffective
