Course Description

The focus of the course is on frameworks and techniques that promote a deeper understanding of high-leverage, research-based best practices for the teaching and learning of mathematics. A deep dive into the Comprehensive Mathematics Instruction Framework will take place along with analysis of student work and classroom video in order to enrich and broaden our understanding of Effective Teaching Practices (NCTM, 2014) and our ability to implement them.

 

Learner Outcomes

Participants in this training will:

         * Identify the components of the CMI framework and use it as a tool for considering learning progressions.

         * Identify Effective Teacher Practices for mathematics teaching

         * Have strategies for incorporating the Effective Teaching Practices into their teaching and support their implementation with other teachers.

         * Identify the components of the CMI framework and use it as a tool for considering learning progressions.

 

 

Course Details

Number of Units: 1 (Available for credit validation registration)

Who Should Attend: This course is for any one that works with high school mathematics in a leadership capacity. This would include but is not limited to high school math teachers, department heads, team leaders, instructional coaches, specialist and administrators.

Guest speakers include co-authors of the Mathematics Vision Project that are also prominent in the mathematics education community. Scott Hendrickson, currently a professor of mathematics education at Brigham Young University. Barbara Kuehl, former assistant superintendent of Salt Lake City School District. Joleigh Honey, current STEM coordinator for the state of Utah. Janent Sutorius, former high school math teacher, department chair and math specialist for Juab School District.
