Course Description

Credit Validation for ORIAS at UC Berkeley Participants Only

Climate and Migration will introduce students to core issues and experiences related to climate-associated migration, past and present. The program will include both overview sessions and regionally focused sessions exploring this topic in Africa, the Mediterranean region, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Students will read materials and learn from guest experts, artists, and activists. Each student will produce either (1) a proposed classroom lesson, incorporating or modeled on the work “A People’s Archive of Sinking and Melting” by Amy Balkin or (2) a robust set of questions and criteria to use to evaluate the sustainability and justice of future responses to climate-related migration.

The ORIAS Summer Teacher Institute is offered annually by a consortium of seven National Resource Centers on the Berkeley campus and coordinated through their joint outreach office, Office of Resources for International and Area Studies (ORIAS). Each year, the program focuses on a new theme. The summer program takes place over 3 days (21 contact hours) during one week.
