Course Description

Lead with Restorative Justice in the Higher Education Environment

This course's track is specifically designed to prepare higher education administrators to implement and facilitate restorative justice options for campus sexual misconduct ranging from prevention (Tier I) to cases of harm (Tier II) and reintegration after harm (Tier III). Participants will leave with an understanding of restorative justice philosophy and practices, common restorative justice approaches for sexual misconduct, impacts of sexual harm, neurobiology of trauma, how to build restorative justice into campus sexual misconduct policies, restorative case management approaches, restorative approaches for community harm, and how to use restorative practices in sexual misconduct prevention programming. While this training is focused on college/university student misconduct, the approaches and skills taught in this training may also be applied to employee misconduct as Title IX regulations and your policies allow.

This course is one of the options for the first of three required courses for the Restorative Justice Facilitation and Leadership Certificate, developed by the University of San Diego's Center for Restorative Justice, housed in the Leadership Studies Department in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences and facilitated by the Division of Professional and Continuing Education.  The certificate curriculum combines an academic understanding of restorative justice with experiential learning to ensure skillful facilitation, with the goal of building a new generation of restorative justice leaders.

This course can be taken in lieu of EDU-X785R, Introduction to Restorative Justice: A Global Social Movement toward certificate requirements.
