Credit Validation for National History Day Only

This course is developed for teachers participating in the Sacrifice for Freedom: World War II in the Pacific Institute. It allows teachers, working collaboratively with students, to study the Pacific Theater of Operations through a variety of sources, mentor their student through the research process of the Silent Hero program, and develop curriculum materials for use in their classroom for the academic year.

University of San Diego – Graduate-Level Extension Credit Information

The University of San Diego partners with this program to offer graduate-level extension credit(s) in semester hours through the Credit Validation Program. To earn units, participants must register for and successfully complete coursework through the external program provider.

Credits earned through USD’s Credit Validation Program are widely accepted by many school districts and universities across the United States for purposes such as license renewal, required professional development hours, short-term skill building, salary advancement, credentialing, and potential advanced degree pathways. These units do not apply toward a master’s or higher degree program at the University of San Diego; however, they may be transferable to advanced degree programs (e.g., MA, EdD, PhD) at other institutions that accept external graduate-level credits.

Participants are responsible for confirming acceptance, transcript requirements, deadlines, and applicability of units with their employing district or intended institution prior to enrollment.

Prerequisites:

All accepted teachers are working teachers in the United States or international schools that participate in the National History Day system.

What You Will Learn

  • Critically analyze the decisions made and major phases of the Pacific Theater of Operations, including planning, logistics, point of entry, military intelligence, military personnel, tactics, strategies, and geographic considerations
  • Analyze the geographical considerations that shaped the operational theater using maps and multimedia resources
  • Mentor their student partner through the Silent Hero program, an intensive geneological research project in which students research the history of one service member or civilian from their home state or territory who died in the Pacific Theater and is buried or memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific in Honolulu
  • Discuss and develop curriculum related materials that can be applied into their US or world history classrooms for the academic year
  • Discuss and develop new opportunities for students to engage in historical research and develop historical thinking skills through the National History Day program and other related curriculum materials
  • Participate in a six-day institute in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they will attend lectures, participate in simulation activities, and tour the major locations that they have been studying over the past six months
