Globalization and rapidly increasing communication make us painfully aware of the intractable problems facing humanity and our planet today.  Thankfully, there are a growing number of talented, ambitious, and courageous individuals known as social entrepreneurs, along with organizations known as social enterprises, that are creating initiatives that attempt to mitigate some of these problems on a scale--and with far more ambition--than ever seen before.  These individuals and organizations are replacing traditional models which target incremental improvement with efforts seeking urgent, systemic change.  Their efforts are being pursued globally in what has come to be known as Social Entrepreneurship.

In this certificate program, participants will get to know who these change agents are and what their organizations do, how they think and work, and why they represent more than just a ray of hope for our world today.  Participants will then have an opportunity to dive deeper into the tools and models that drive successful social enterprises and finally, to explore and test how these might apply to their organizations and careers.

A "fourth sector" has developed, which is blurring the traditional boundaries among nonprofit enterprises, government, and business.  It is critical that participants understand the opportunities and challenges in this new landscape.  Accordingly, this certificate considers the full spectrum of social business models, including strictly nonprofit organizations, enterprises developing revenue-generating products or services for a social goal, and socially responsible for-profit companies.  This certificate will expose participants to:  theories of entrepreneurship, models of social change, management skills and the leadership required for successful socially entrepreneurial organizations.  Courses also cover the scaling of social impact, various potential legal structures, forms of financing, tools used to implement the creation of a social enterprise and impact measurement for social mission organizations.

Social entrepreneurship is a rapidly developing and evolving field in which nonprofit and business leaders design, grow, and lead mission-driven enterprises.  This certificate takes a global perspective, including organizations and speakers from San Diego, around the U.S., and internationally.  It is designed to be interactive and engage students through readings, videos, class discussions, case studies and applied projects.  The program targets students who want to explore social enterprise start-ups or encourage innovation in their existing organizations, as well as those who are just curious about the field and want to learn about social entrepreneurship and explore career opportunities.

The Social Entrepreneurship in Action Certificate is offered by the USD Kroc School of Peace Studies and facilitated by the Division of Professional and Continuing Education. The certificate is designed for professional practice with the goal of either creating a new social entrepreneurship venture or adding social entrepreneurship practices to your existing organization.
