This course is designed to allow teachers and staff the opportunity to study, in-depth, the Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices (EMTP) from our District Action Plan (DAP). This course supports all math teachers in implementing and sustaining EMTP 1,2,4 and 8 to strengthen standard based instruction. This class will be utilizing The 5 Practices in Practice. Each participant will reflect on their practice, view exemplars, and link the 5 practices to their own instruction. This course will provide detailed support for ambitious teaching. Ambitious teaching requires attention to equity and to challenge the long-standing practices to provide access and opportunity for every student, so they can develop strong positive identities as learners of mathematics. At the center of ambitious teaching is a focus on classroom discourse. The core concepts of ambitious teaching in The 5 Practices in Practice aligns to DoDEA’s definition of Excellent Instruction to maximize the learning of all students. This course uses a research based text by the National Council of Mathematic Teachers available on grade bands (elementary, middle, and high) to support the professional learning of all who teach and support math.
